Coming up this weekend is the one of most important events of the year involving wine in Italy.

For the past 16 years on the last Sunday in May, “Movimento Turismo del Vino” (Italy’s Wine Tourism Movement) members have opened their doors to the public, establishing an immediate and direct contact with all wine lovers and tourists.

Nearly 1000 wineries are open to the public nationwide with a wide variety of entertaining initiatives.

(ANSA) – Rome, May 22 – Italy is bracing for a sizzling weekend and health alerts have been issued for 19 cities due to the unusually high heat and humidity.

The country currently finds itself at the center of a high pressure system which is ushering hot and sand-filled air from the Sahara.

This has created a ‘cap’ over many urban areas where heat and humidity, along with smog, are trapped with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees centigrade and humidity running as high as 80% or more.

Four cities on Saturday will be at ‘level 2′ alert – Catania, Messina, Reggio Calabria and Venice – while the highest ‘level 3′ alert has been issued for Florence, Latina, Perugia and Rome.

This means that the people most at risk of high heat and humidity – the elderly, young children and people with respiratory ailments – should stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day.

The situation will be even worse on Sunday when 14 cities will be on alert.

A ‘level 2′ alert has been issued for Bari, Bologna, Brescia, Catania, Civitavecchia, Frosinone, Messina, Milan, Naples, Pescara, Reggio Calabria, Rieti, Turin and Viterbo, while Florence, Latina, Perugia, Rome and Venice will see a ‘level 3′ alert.

The heat wave is expected to extend into the first part of next week.

51 euro fine

Having only recently taken delivery of his new £5 million toy, a Sunseeker 90, Lewis Hamilton‘s unlucky year continued when the Italian Port Authorities fined him for anchoring his Sunseeker, a few metres inside an Italian marine reserve, an Italian daily newspaper reported yesterday.

Apparently, the Italian Port Authority launch caught him some 23 metres inside the Bergeggi reserve on the Ligurian Riviera and applied a 51 Euro fine.

Whilst he might have been slightly embarrased, I am sure the 51 euro fine did not dent his wallet too much!
